Selling goods online has become a simpler and more widespread process than ever, for both independent businesses and limited companies. The major E-commerce corporations such as Amazon (like them or loath them) have led the way in revolutionising the way that people shop for every type of product, from food and drink to TV and audio.

The E-Commerce User Experience

Most shop-based websites follow the similar user-experience to process an order. This begins with a search and filter facility to find the desired product, which leads to a product page with picture(s) that may also include variations in a drop down menu for different colours or sizes. Prices will be listed alongside a product description. Once the user is happy with the selection they will click the ‘add to basket/cart’ button which will add it to a cart, usually visible via an icon in the header of the page. Once the user has finished shopping they can enter a checkout area, where they can add their delivery address. The price of this can usually calculated depending on this location and change depending on product prices, weights and sizes. Some websites offer free delivery for all products or a selected range. To complete the order, customers will be taken to a secure payment gateway. This could be Stripe or Paypal, WooCommerce or a Merchant Gateway operated by a bank such as Barclaycard. Debit/Credit Card details are encrypted by these services when payments are made. Customers should always look out for an SSL security certificate (padlock icon in browser) when using E-commerce websites.

E-Commerce Website Technologies

Different options for constructing and managing E-commerce based websites include WordPress with WooCommerce, Magento, Shopify or bespoke platforms constructed using HTML/CSS/PHP/Javascript. Whilst I have experience in developing websites on Magento and Spotify, my platform of choice is now WordPress with WooCommerce. WordPress is a content management system that I include on all of my website projects now, whereas WooCommerce is a software plug-in that can be uploaded onto the platform to provide all the necessary E-Commerce features.

WooCommerce allows users to upload and edit product listings, change prices, add variations and multiple product images in addition to all the required sales administration features. This includes customer information and sales reporting, delivery options and payment facilities. The intuitive and user-friendly interface can be comfortably learned and utilised by administrators. For all E-commerce websites constructed by myself, I will include a full WooCommerce tutorial on completion of the project.
